Only by chance last black Valtellina pigs (also called black Grison pigs) were found in 2013 in an Italian educational farm (fattoria ditattica). With these alone we could not have continued to breed because of inbreeding. But with targeted search tours to remote areas two other relict populations of black and spotted Alpin pigs were found, namely the Pied Samolaco and the spotted South Tyrolean pigs.
Dedicated breeders from the South Tyrol and Switzerland have rebuilt the breed in Italy, which is now expanding again in the neighboring countries. Read on for more about this last pigs of the Alps and the up to now successful project.
